Coaching Behind Closed Doors – Success Journey

Iain enjoyed his work but knew he wanted to take it to the next level of success. After having a tree change he really wanted to contribute and do more with the community in the South West of Western Australia business region.

Looking for ways to move his business forward, Iain felt something was missing and in playing the game in his head – he had a very focused product and message.

He recognised he was stuck within his expertise and knowledge, which certainly served him in the corporate industry, yet the market demand had changed. He quickly realised that he needed to change his business model.

As an expert with many degrees, Iain has an abundance of knowledge, experiences, wisdom and life lessons, and wanted to make sure that he did not put himself in a box. He wanted to have the freedom to package his products and services with flexibility and uniqueness, whilst developing his new business model.

Inside our coaching conversations, we explored Iain’s lifeline and could see clearly what made his services unique and why.

He started listening to what others were telling him they needed. He noticed there was a common thread, which linked to his expertise and matched his values of contributing to the southwest business community.

He was then able to package his knowledge and uniqueness making it available to meet the demand.

Iain often woke up at 3am, tossing and turning trying to get back to sleep. Yet on this particular evening, his 3am wake up call was very different giving him clarity on his purposeful vision and mission.

Iain’s 3am Wake-Up Call

Iain had a clear sense that he had come to the end of the line and had to start something new and/or do business differently.  This 3am wake up call was different to others he had in the past because he felt a strong force to get up and take action immediately listening to and trusting his gut. He was able to capture clearly after doing further research online which confirmed his hunch and what the business community were telling him they needed.

As Iain’s coach, I challenged him to think very deeply about who he was, what he has to offer, what he believed in and what he wanted to do in business. This is what supported Iain’s 3am wake up call to be so insightful and for him to get up and take immediate action.

This was the turning point as he then repositioned his business model, which is how he positioned all his strengths, knowledge and experiences as the Business Growth Specialist.

Iain gained clarity in defining his uniqueness from the ‘insight out’ making sure he was not put in a box as he had so much knowledge, wisdom, experiences and strengths to offer the business world.

Today, Iain is known as the Business Growth Specialist throughout the business community in Perth and in the south west region who offers regular speaking presentations, facilitation of mastermind groups called ‘Peer Magic’, one on one consulting. Helping businesses from the micro to those who have, or need, boards of directors. He is passionate about helping business owners achieve their dreams. Also known as the Board Bloke for his work with boards and advisory boards. He offers programs for small businesses, family businesses and not-for-profits.

  1. Right from our initial conversation, trust and rapport was built with no awkwardness.
  2. He identified that he wanted to be working with someone who knew the gender issues because his working world was too masculine in the past.

What tips would you give to someone who wants next level success?

You can’t do it yourself. To shift the mindset that you need to be able to do it on your own. Don’t fall into that assumption.

Hiring a coach, it’s a very ‘high trust’ relationship – make sure it is someone that you can freely open up with. To be able to discuss your hopes, fears, inhibitions and blockages, have made the difference because I could open up freely with me.

Of the things that were worrying me and the things I wanted to change 8 or 9 months ago, virtually none of those are bugging me now. I still have issues in my business, but so much has shifted and so much stuff has got out of my own way, especially in my mindset; I’m facing different and much more fun issues in my business nowadays.

Iain has been able to identify what makes him unique and to define his purpose – he is now having more fun living his legacy knowing that he is ‘making a difference’.
