Creating Clarity through the Power of Simple Meditation

I’ve just been sitting here meditating and I often gain insights as I meditate.

Thought I’d share my insight today…

One of the things that I notice is that we are all working really hard to get ahead in life. As I reflect back on my sporting days when being in the zone, I realised It was never about working hard or getting ahead whilst being in the zone. There was always a feeling of spaciousness in mind and body. There was always a sense of flow. There was always a sense of knowing which step to take next and which direction to go.

This is something that each and every one of us has within, but what happens is we are in our head strategizing trying to work it all out. That’s when it becomes harder work because we are actually pushing up against and trying to work out the steps ahead without really being here first.

The only way you are ever going to know your next step is when you are in the present moment. So, that’s what I would like to share a little more about. Being present to your flow, in the moment trusting the inner voice, the inner vision that gives you that next step. Trusting that gut feel, that instinctual knowing that says ‘go this way’, ‘take this direction’.

Most of the time we have so many responsibilities, which we all do have, it is important to start to create some space for yourself so that you can practice listening into that gut feel, that intuitive knowing. Creating some space so that you can practice that is paramount for your momentum.

This is where true innovation comes from. We all have a creative nature inside each and every one of us; we are all born that way. That is not necessarily just about in the arts. It is knowing the creative strengths, gifts and talents that you have within already that somehow might have been buried, blocked or pushed aside because you are on that survival path of trying to get ahead. Tapping into your own natural flow, which is the creative path to a fulfilling life.

Making some space and time for yourself by going inwards will quieten the busy mind. One of the ways I do that is through meditation. I like to keep it really simple by focusing in on the breath. You can even do this consciously throughout the day by taking 10 deep breaths every hour.

This will actually slow down the busy mind and slow down the rush feeling inside, so that over time you will create space, not only in your life, in your mind, in your body, in between the actions that you are taking throughout the day that you are responsible for.

One of the most natural tools we are born into this life with is the breath. Taking conscious deep breaths throughout your day will slow things down and bring you back into the present moment. Being fully present is a conversation I often have with many of my clients and I’ve personally been through this myself with my own coach.

This has become my daily practice, which is the most powerful way I have ever found that has supported me in staying present in this moment, to stay in my body so that my head doesn’t race ahead. I notice if ever I feel a sense of frustration, anxiousness or overwhelm that is my indicator that my head has taken over in that moment. I notice I am able to catch it much quicker these days. This practice has been a major contributor in creating a healthy balance for my mental well-being, physical well-being and emotional well-being.

Enjoy watching my video. I hope this supports you in trusting your intuitive flow.

Ways to Easily Evolve when Facing Life Transitions

You may find yourself going through some sort of transition in life. If so, this is normally not an easy process as you may be facing the challenge of being in the ‘muddle’ of life. One moment feeling like you have it all handled, and the next, wondering what happened!

Who am I now? You may be asking! What are my next steps? What happened to the clarity of direction you may have had in the past? I have often felt like I have hit a brick wall with clarity turning into a haze of uncertainty. On many an occasion when facing transitions in life, I have often caught myself asking these very profound questions.

The most challenging and rewarding path is our evolving transitions in life. Some of the many evolving paths I have personally witnessed is the transition of being married to then going through divorce, from being employed in a large organization to starting my own business, from health and wellbeing challenges to guilt-free self care, from financial security to financial uncertainty and many more.

The Power of Uncertainty and Vulnerability

During these transitional times, my clarity of direction in life always went through a dark tunnel of uncertainty and vulnerability. The truth is, I never made it easy on myself because I would always resist the change. This would cause greater stress, anxiety and overwhelm in my mind and body, which never made it a quicker journey towards reaching a new normal.

I always found that there was light at the end of this dark tunnel when allowing myself to be patient inside of the feelings of uncertainty. As I would continue to focus on what I was certain about inside my life right here and now, this would help me to stay present to what was already working in my life.

I knew my habitual personality was to create strategies and work it all out.  I was committed to doing things differently without the push, strive and drive. To allow new insight and awareness to come to me at the time it is meant to. To trust that there is a powerful learning lesson inside this transition and if I push it, I will only make it harder to learn the lesson.

To remind myself that there is light inside this dark tunnel and not to push for results.

I would remind myself of the saying…

“You may not always get what you think you want,
but you will always get what you need for your highest evolution.”

I always found myself peacefully coming out the other end with greater awareness and insight into the next phase of life with a deeper knowing of what was right for me at that stage of my life.

We know that change and transitioning is a part of life, so why do we sometimes hang on to the same old story keeping us from living a successful and fulfilling life?

If you are hanging on to a story of what success is meant to look like, like I did, then it will take a very long time to see the learning lessons and ways to create a new life with this new awareness, knowledge and insightful wisdom.

When going through the muddle of a life changing transition, it can cause many fearful feelings of self-doubt, overwhelm, disappointment, uncertainty and vulnerability. If you are use to having success in your life, without the challenges that will cause you to gain new insight about yourself, then you may get stuck in your thinking and automatic action processes, limiting your full potential.

Are You Really Living your Purposeful Path?

The natural evolution of transitioning is important for the exponential growth of your purpose. You may be on the wrong track and something will interrupt your habitual path in order for you to gain greater insight into your real self. To create the space and time needed, to allow yourself to develop new ways of creating a life and business you love to live from inside out.

For many years, I followed a path of what I thought success looked like. I realized that I had developed this picture due to unmet needs of being liked, accepted, loved, respected, acknowledged, valued etc. When I met those needs intrinsically, that is when I was able to clearly see and feel my purposeful path of inspiring others to tune into being an expression of their real self.

I needed to clean up my own needs to get myself out of the way. In other words, I was able to hear my calling instead of what I thought I needed to do to be successful. This came in the way of clear next steps, one step at a time.

Become Your Own Best Friend

So if you are going through a transition as we speak, allow yourself to feel the space of vulnerability and uncertainty. Become your own best friend inside this space and make sure you do not try to fill the space up with old habits. Feel the space and acknowledge every single feeling coming up inside of you (yes, be with your feelings and do not squash them down or push them aside).

Speak kindly and gently to your fears and doubts with support and guidance just like you would a scared child. This is exactly what I did. Instead of making my feelings wrong and burying them by pushing harder, I decided to become my own best friend and speak to myself with a supportive, kind and loving voice.

If you continue to beat yourself up with the old theory of ‘no pain – no gain’ (like I use to), then you will find yourself trying harder and harder in life to achieve. This will keep you on the treadmill of continually hitting the glass ceiling and feeling exhausted each day. Your health and wellbeing will definitely suffer. This will affect the quality of your relationships at home and at work.

As I mentioned to a colleague this week, who is going through a transition
at this time in her life, to make sure she ‘feels the space’ – ‘not fill the space’.

Myth:  Busy is the New Black

Too often I have felt lazy if I was not keeping busy or feeling like I was not being productive. When in actual fact I was living a false sense of productivity. This was my ego habitual self and not the truth to getting to know my whole self.

We are too quick to get on the busy path, instead of allowing the space to guide us one step at a time. Your inspiring vision will come to you when you stay in a state of ease, flow and stillness.

Ask yourself these 5 questions if feeling challenged right now:

  1. What meaning am I making from this event/change?
  2. What am I learning about myself in who I am being and how I am acting or reacting?
  3. Why am I acting this way and what new insight have I gained?
  4. Who do I choose to become now that I know this about myself?
  5. What new actions am I going to take to support my new commitment?
Design your Life and Business Success for 2019

Happy New Year. Welcome to 2019. I am really looking forward to sharing a truly inspiring year together filled with purpose and presence.

It’s that time of the year where my husband, Mark, and I sit by the pool with our favourite bottle of champagne and cheese platter, taking time out to reflect on our year. We find this helps us to gain clarity of our direction for this coming year. Especially clarifying our evolving next steps in alignment with our vision, goals and values.

Throughout the year, we write on post-it notes our acknowledgements for the day, expressing gratitude for new experiences we have had, humbled by the people we meet and share time with, quality time with our family, grateful for current and new work contracts, financial growth, new business opportunities, time-out for self, health and fitness, events we have attended, and anything else we feel most grateful for.

We have a very large vase sitting in the corner of our kitchen to remind us of the importance of reflection each day. It certainly does not take long for the jar to fill up. Take a look at it this year.

One by one we reminisce on events, places, people, challenges, opportunities, we have experienced. We share our realisations and insights of where we are today, new insights we have gained and what new learnings we want to expand on this year.

With a big ‘cheers’ and the sound of the clinging of the champagne glasses, we celebrate those special moments all over again.

As we remember events we totally forgot about attending, reminisce about the places we visited on our holiday in Singapore, thankful for the contracts that came out of the blue, humbled by the quality of time we spent with our family and friends, surprised about the number of movies we saw (definitely movie buffs) and much more.

I mentioned to Mark that I see a pattern in our acknowledgements and how the actions we take truly indicates what is most important to us. For example, we noticed our love for events and movies, dinner dates together, time with family and friends, loving our work life, enjoying time in our garden, love my writing time at cafes close to the beach, our walks along the beach, making time to exercise, breath meditation, walking our dog in nature etc.

We notice our life theme running throughout every reflection. It was very obvious to us, as to what is most important in our lives, in looking at specifically where we are spending our time.

Our values stood out very clearly and we were very excited to confirm our commitment in the way we lived our everyday way of life and business correlating with our core values.

The theme running through our values is:

  • Loving Marriage
  • Connection with Family and Friends
  • Energising Health, Fitness and Well-Being
  • Fulfilling Business Life
  • Harmonious Home Life
  • Balancing Time for Self

The benefits we both notice and shared with each other is that we never realize just how much we already live a full life. We often find ourselves so busy getting caught up in where we are heading and not stopping to fully take in the fullness of the simple steps we take each day. We also noticed what we take for granted at times, looking at what we don’t have or still have not achieved.

What’s most important to us both is to consciously design a life and business we love to live each day. What we recognise is the areas that we are living our core values and where we may need to place our focus on this year.

The next step we take is to identify the specific areas we want to focus on.

Mark mentioned that he wants to create more time for himself outside of business. Because he works in the events industry, this means his hours vary. This also means that his working week varies and a routine can only be scheduled placed around the event bookings.

My coaching business model is very different as I choose to set my week up with a routine that accommodates my personal and business energy cycles. In other words, I know what time of day works best for me to make appointments with clients, business management time, marketing time, my personal appointments for self-time etc.

I share with Mark that I would like to invite family and friends over for dinner on a regular basis. We often speak about it, yet time gets gobbled up with other areas that are important to us.

We then wrote out our personal and business goals for the next 12 months.

I always find our goals are the obvious next steps we need to focus on. In other words, the areas that we know we have dropped the ball and now is the time to pick it up and create new habits that support our growth, happiness and fulfilment.

I hope this gives you the inspiration to make time to reflect on where you are spending your time, energy and money. These are all indicators to gain consciousness as to whether you are living your values each day or living into a hopeful future.

Live your Vision: Set yourself up for Success in 2018

With 2018 just around the corner, I have been taking time out to reflect on my accomplishments, challenges and insightful lessons throughout the year. This is always a fabulous time for reflection.

I am wondering how did your year shape up? Did you achieve what you set out to or did you notice yourself still facing the same challenges feeling frustrated about what will change in 2018?

If you want to hit the ground running in 2018 with greater clarity, making sure you live your inspirational vision, achieving your goals, below are 5 tips that can give you a strong foundation.

1. Reflection

Take time out before the year is over to reflect on your accomplishments in 2017 – no matter how big or how small – write down all your achievements. This will create momentum to build on your foundation for 2018. Then look at what systems worked for you in your personal and business life covering all areas important to you i.e. family, business, staff management, relationships, finances, leadership, health and wellness etc.

Notice when you reflect on what did work, what was it that did not work for you also and what were the areas that you let yourself down in i.e. not making time to exercise, business systems not managed, saying ‘Yes’ when you really want to say ‘No’ etc. By recognizing your habits that do not support your vision and goals, will give you the perfect opportunity to make the necessary conscious changes in 2018. No, not like a wish – a solid foundational system that will give you the time, energy and financial opportunities you truly want.

A celebration is most important in this step. When you celebrate and acknowledge your accomplishments, this creates a momentum for you to ‘ride the wave of success’ taking it into 2018. If you continually keep looking at what you did not achieve when you will take that way of thinking also into 2009 and nothing will change. Give yourself a break and start acknowledging yourself no matter what!

2. Clear Blockages

This is the hidden bit that means so much towards your success. Have you heard the saying that says…’you will continually keep getting what you continually keep doing’. The way you will know your blockages is by looking at the results that you are not getting. For example, if you are struggling with a particular area in your business, then you will have a negative belief that is driving you to create the results you do not want or if you continually find your communication skills are not understood, then you may also have a negative belief driving it – no matter how hard you try.

To clear your blockages is to become aware of them and then to transform them into powerful positive statements based on the result you do want. Remember that you will always keep getting what you focus on and if you are not getting your desired results, there is a part of you inside that does not believe you can achieve it – no matter how determined and persistent you are. Your inside beliefs must match your outside desired results first.

3. Clearing Clutter

I love this one because I get to throw out the old and make space for the new opportunities coming in for 2018. When you clear your home and office space, it will give you more energy (not to mention space) for you to build from. Clearing clutter is a physical, environmental and most of all, emotional experience, giving you space to deal with challenges. It can be difficult to understand this because it is an experiential reward, which will only occur once you have taken the action.

Are you someone who is used to living in clutter? Your office may always be a mess with papers disorganised, behind in taxation and budgets – or you may have clothes in your closet that you haven’t worn for years because you keep telling yourself that you will lose the extra kilos to fit into them again. When you live in an environment that supports you now, you will find that there will be more flow and freedom in your life and around your time scheduling. You will be surprised at what you can fit into your day when you live and work in a clutter-free zone.

Allow yourself to let go of the old and create a vacuum for the new. Be ruthless and either sell anything you are not using anymore, give it away to someone you know will use it, or give it to charity. Notice the loss of energy and focus and how much time is wasted in that very moment. Imagine what happens when you have a trail of things left undone and how much this stops you moving forward in life.

When you are clutter-free, you also clear your mind and create a free-flow of energy to do the things that are most important. Yes, it can be a little overwhelming if you have allowed things to accumulate over time, but persist, because it is worth it.

Live your Vision: Set yourself up for Success in 2018

4. Clear Vision and Goals

Imagine it is this time next year – yes, December 2018, and you are reflecting on your achieved vision and goals. What would you like to be saying you have accomplished? Write this in a script format being as descriptive as possible, using detail, feelings and expression.

For example: “I am so excited that I have now set all my systems up inside my business which are running very smoothly with a 75% financial growth. I love working with my ideal clients who are so easy to work with. My wife and I are so happy because we made time to go on holidays with our children to Queensland. Most of all I love the fact that I was able to keep my phone turned off and not worry about the running of my business.”

Bring in all the areas of your life that are important to you into you descriptive vision. You need to make it believable for you because your deep belief will be your natural motivator all year through, especially when you match your values.

Once you have your clear vision, then you need to break it down into goals. This is what I call ‘Zoning’. Zoning is a great way to maintain daily focus in the direction of your vision. How it works is you take a look at your vision and pick out all the desired end results i.e. Where do you want to go on Holidays with your family and what systems do you want to set up in the business and how much increase in your business do you want financially etc.

Once you have created your zoning goals, then you get a blank sheet of paper for each and bring the goals into reality today by answering these questions.

  1. Why do you want to achieve this goal?
  2. When would you like to achieve this goal by?
  3. What resources (people I know) do I currently have to help me achieve this goal?
  4. What are the Inspired Actions I want to take towards this goal?
  5. How will I celebrate when I have achieved my goal?

5. Success Mindset and Clarity

Without Mindset and Clarity, you will sabotage your success every time. Have you ever set a new year resolution really determined to make it happen only to find that by March that year the enthusiasm slipped through your fingers? You see, your conscious mind is the one setting your new year resolutions up and the subconscious mind is the one really running the show. So how do you set yourself up to succeed definitely this year?

In my national sporting days back in the 1980’s I heard about a non-evasive technique used at the Sporting Institute in America for performance testing. What they did was monitored the performance of each Olympian by linking them to a computer and got them to relax their body (yes they were in a still position) at the same time they would imagine in their mind that they were running their event at the Olympics. The results were astonishing because they found that the monitor showed that all the necessary muscles according to their individual event activated inside their body, even when they were still, as though they were running the event with the same amount of strength required. This all occurred from their Mind imaging their event as though they were actually participating in their event on the day.

I then practised this same technique as a part of my training for nationals and realized that if this works for my sporting events, then how about the rest of my life. I have been using this technique ever since and this is how I create my own life and business success.

Every day I visualize my Vision as though I have already achieved it, exactly the way the Olympians ran their event before they were at the Olympics. This is the most important key to having your vision and goals become a reality. You need to believe it first before you will see it in the physical form. Most of all you need to FEEL it as though it has already been achieved and take that feeling into your everyday life. You only need 2-5 minutes of your time each day to do this. The most challenging part for most people is to allow themselves to be still and slow down the busy mind that says “I don’t have time…” For you to maintain clarity and a mindset each day that matches, then this IS the key to Success for 2018 and beyond.

6. Daily Inspired Actions

Without action – nothing will be achieved. The actions I am referring to here are called Inspired Actions. These are not based on overwhelming should’s, ought to’s or have to’s. Inspired Action generally comes to you in the quietness of your mind, possibly when you are gardening, jogging, playing sport, meditating, holding your baby or even playing with your children etc.

These are actions that naturally come to you, which you feel, is your next step. This has a feeling of ‘I can’t wait to do it’. It also feels easy and in the flow. When you listen and take action on your inspired thought or idea, you will have no concerns about the outcome because you love whatever you are doing just by following your own intuition and acting on it.

When you follow your Inspired Actions your results will be amazing. We tend to look for ‘how to’ achieve your goals ‘actions’ coming from the left brain logic which is only one way of looking at things. This may be limiting your success. Everyone has Inspired Actions come into your mind every day, but we are so busy with our habits and routines that we either do not hear it or we say ‘I will get to that later’. Later never comes…until the new year resolutions!

Set yourself up this coming year to succeed by giving yourself plenty of time to de-stress, listen and act upon your Daily Inspired Actions.

Wishing you Great Success and Purpose in 2018 and beyond.

Strong Foundations: Never Underestimate the Basics

How much time do you waste looking for things and you just can’t seem to find stuff when you need it?

How often do you find yourself losing focus and energy because you keep thinking that you must get around to fixing or changing this or that?

How often do you feel frustrated when all you want to do is make more time for yourself and your family?

Melissa is a business owner who came to me for coaching because she wanted to increase her profits and her client attraction. She expressed her feelings of overwhelm and frustration because she wanted to get more organised inside her business and found herself not being very productive at all – in fact, she felt like she was wasting a lot of her time, energy and money.

One of the first places Melissa started was in cleaning up her environment. This meant clearing all the clutter in her office, home, car etc. I explained to Melissa that ‘anything that is not organised – will always organise her’. She told me that she could relate to this because she felt like all her time was being chewed up with unproductive patterns and she did not want another year to go by without making time to work on her business instead of getting stuck inside the day to day putting out of fires.

At Melissa’s next coaching session she was a new person. Much more relaxed, confident and enthusiastic about her business. She has now found time to do things that she had been putting off for years just by clearing the clutter and making space in her life. Melissa found that by organising her time, she miraculously found more time in her life to choose. A big one for Melissa was to spend more time with her children and has now put systems in place that work for her lifestyle and business style.

Melissa recognised that because she was so used to working and living inside of clutter, she had never experienced the difference before. She is also noticing how much more present she is when at home as she did not realise just how much of her time was caught up with not really be there. She was physically there – but not emotionally because her mind was always on work. Melissa is now living her life fully and loving her new founded lifestyle and business style.

Melissa admitted to me that she was sceptical about the effects of decluttering and most thankful that she took the actions because she had no idea that it would give her all of what she has now gained in her whole life.

If you want success in your life and business, then get started and clear the clutter. Give this gift to yourself; just like Melissa did by spending the time to declutter every area of your life – home, office, car, computer, garage, cupboards etc. and you will be amazed at your results.

Strong Foundations: Never Underestimate the Basics

Ways to get started:

  1. Plan your time to declutter (yes stick it in your diary as an appointment). Make this time a priority and be realistic as it may take a few days or even longer.
  2. Break it down into chunks. Write down your areas to declutter and choose one area at a time. Choose the highest energy and time drains first.
  3. Choose what you are going to do with your clutter. Sell it or have a garage sale. Give it away to a friend or someone in need. Place it in a gift box if it is something you have never used and wrap it for a friend.
  4. Clear out your computer. Use the 3 D Motto – Do it – Delegate it – Dump it. Make sure you do a back up first.
  5. Keep up-to-date. Book in your declutter time ahead each year and place it in your diary.

A Final Thought:

Never underestimate the basics. It is the simple task of decluttering that will support you to achieve what you want in your life and business success.  This is the very thing that will give you more time and more energy to free you up to do the important things that will help you to live your whole life with ease, flow and clarity.

How Iain’s 3am Wake Up Call gained Clarity of a New Business Model

Coaching Behind Closed Doors – Success Journey

Iain enjoyed his work but knew he wanted to take it to the next level of success. After having a tree change he really wanted to contribute and do more with the community in the South West of Western Australia business region.

Looking for ways to move his business forward, Iain felt something was missing and in playing the game in his head – he had a very focused product and message.

He recognised he was stuck within his expertise and knowledge, which certainly served him in the corporate industry, yet the market demand had changed. He quickly realised that he needed to change his business model.

As an expert with many degrees, Iain has an abundance of knowledge, experiences, wisdom and life lessons, and wanted to make sure that he did not put himself in a box. He wanted to have the freedom to package his products and services with flexibility and uniqueness, whilst developing his new business model.

Inside our coaching conversations, we explored Iain’s lifeline and could see clearly what made his services unique and why.

He started listening to what others were telling him they needed. He noticed there was a common thread, which linked to his expertise and matched his values of contributing to the southwest business community.

He was then able to package his knowledge and uniqueness making it available to meet the demand.

Iain often woke up at 3am, tossing and turning trying to get back to sleep. Yet on this particular evening, his 3am wake up call was very different giving him clarity on his purposeful vision and mission.

Watch the video interview with Iain Massey, CEO, Upland Consulting as he shares about his 3am wake up call and his journey from business uncertainty to clear and decisive business purpose and making a difference.

Iain’s 3am Wake-Up Call

Iain had a clear sense that he had come to the end of the line and had to start something new and/or do business differently.  This 3am wake up call was different to others he had in the past because he felt a strong force to get up and take action immediately listening to and trusting his gut. He was able to capture clearly after doing further research online which confirmed his hunch and what the business community were telling him they needed.

As Iain’s coach, I challenged him to think very deeply about who he was, what he has to offer, what he believed in and what he wanted to do in business. This is what supported Iain’s 3am wake up call to be so insightful and for him to get up and take immediate action.

This was the turning point as he then repositioned his business model, which is how he positioned all his strengths, knowledge and experiences as the Business Growth Specialist.

Iain gained clarity in defining his uniqueness from the ‘insight out’ making sure he was not put in a box as he had so much knowledge, wisdom, experiences and strengths to offer the business world.

Today, Iain is known as the Business Growth Specialist throughout the business community in Perth and in the south west region who offers regular speaking presentations, facilitation of mastermind groups called ‘Peer Magic’, one on one consulting. Helping businesses from the micro to those who have, or need, boards of directors. He is passionate about helping business owners achieve their dreams. Also known as the Board Bloke for his work with boards and advisory boards. He offers programs for small businesses, family businesses and not-for-profits.

What makes Annette’s coaching style unique and why Iain decided to hire me as his coach?

  1. Right from our initial conversation, trust and rapport was built with no awkwardness.
  2. He identified that he wanted to be working with someone who knew the gender issues because his working world was too masculine in the past.
  3. He knew from the start he wanted my strong intuitiveness because he knew he had gone as far as he could with rationality.
  4. Due to my strong intuitiveness, I cottoned on to things quickly – spoken or unspoken!
  5. He knew he wanted someone who had processes, training and skills for that rapid journey.

This is why Iain signed up for the premium weekly coaching package because he wanted change fast and that meant he had to depend on me to come along the journey quickly as well. He received exactly what he signed up for and much more.

What tips would you give to someone who wants next level success?

You can’t do it yourself. To shift the mindset that you need to be able to do it on your own. Don’t fall into that assumption.

Hiring a coach, it’s a very ‘high trust’ relationship – make sure it is someone that you can freely open up with. To be able to discuss your hopes, fears, inhibitions and blockages, have made the difference because I could open up freely with me.

Of the things that were worrying me and the things I wanted to change 8 or 9 months ago, virtually none of those are bugging me now. I still have issues in my business, but so much has shifted and so much stuff has got out of my own way, especially in my mindset; I’m facing different and much more fun issues in my business nowadays.

Iain has been able to identify what makes him unique and to define his purpose – he is now having more fun living his legacy knowing that he is ‘making a difference’.

Looking through the Magnifying Glass

One of the most common things I hear from people I coach in the first three months of their coaching journey is that they are seeing more and more areas in their professional and personal life that they feel they need to clear up – areas they were not even aware of!

This is quite normal when looking at change and wanting to transform those areas that may not be working for you. I call it ‘looking through the magnifying glass’. All of a sudden, you feel as if everything is right in your face and needs to be dealt with as soon as possible for you to move forward.

For example, you may want to spend more time with your family and doing other things important to you, yet your time is locked into your business life.

As you begin to take a closer look into what is not working in your personal and business life, you might realise you have challenges in areas like staff not taking on the roles and responsibilities you hired them for in the first place, identifying all the areas where you are crossing your own boundaries, high expectations of self and others, doing everything yourself and not asking for support, etc. No wonder your time is locked up in your professional life, giving you no space and time for flexibility and freedom.

‘The key to persistence is to focus on your vision, tune into your values and stay on your path at all times. Do not get swayed by other people’s vision and values.’

This is when it is easy for frustration; resignation and a sense of being overwhelmed can overtake your commitment. The key is to always remember that whatever you are looking at in your life is being looked at through a magnifying glass, giving the illusion that it is bigger than it really is. This occurs because when you start to focus and take action on things in your life that you would like to achieve, there will always be areas that you were not previously aware of, that also need to be managed to take you to the next step of achievement.

Coaching Tip – Gaining Clarity and Direction

Whenever I go into those feelings of frustration and being overwhelmed, one of the things that help to clarify my thoughts and focus is to get a blank sheet of paper and write down everything that is filling my head.

Try this – get it all out of your head and break it down into bite-size action pieces. This will take away the magnified illusion and will also free you from the magnified feelings.

‘Overwhelm’ and ‘frustration’ are the most common words I hear at the start of a coaching session, but after breaking down the challenges by writing them down, they quickly turn into ‘clarity’ and ‘direction’.

Staying focussed on your vision, mission and values is paramount when it comes to sustainable success as a champion leader.
